After my lawn came in, weeds were also starting to thrive. What can I do to fix this?

If this is the first year your lawn has been in, be patient with the weeds. They are easy enough to get rid of with proper treatments of weed control and fertilizer. A healthy lawn that is properly fertilized will help to choke out most of your weeds. For the more persistent ones, a good quality weed control application should be used. This will help to rid your lawn of those unsightly weeds. Spring and fall are the best times to control these weeds but a quality fertilizer used during the year will help to improve the lawn quality. Using both weed control and fertilizer “properly” will get you that beautiful Bluegrass lawn everyone wants.

Why do I have weeds? There are so many, and my builder put in clean top soil. I thought the mixture you spray contains only grass seed?

Topsoil will always have some plant matter in it, and there will always be weed seeds in that soil that will eventually germinate. After all, those weeds and weed seeds were here before your property was developed. They did not die, they were just relocated. The key is to get that lawn up as fast as possible by watering every area to help choke out that weed germination. We install a fertilizer in our mixture to feed those new grass seeds and help them stay healthy for almost 2 months. Afterwards, a program should be started which includes more fertilizer and a weed control application. It’s called a maintenance program. Something that will keep your lawn healthy and weed free. Its something that the homeowner can do themselves or let us set that program up and take that worry away for you and give you the results your looking for.

Keep in mind, the time of year your hydroseed is installed will dictate how and when the weeds will arrive. Late August or early September is the perfect time of year to put your lawn in. Our Bluegrass mixes love the cooler season and will thrive during this time of year with minimal weeds germinating. Spring time would be the 2nd best time of year because the temperature is cool and weeds do not like cool temperature. We have to be careful in spring, sometimes we get too much rain which is not good for a newly planted lawn. Summer time, June and July are sometimes difficult to get a quick lawn with no weeds. This time of year is generally dry with minimal rainfall and very warm. Weeds love this time of year and start to thrive. A lack of watering will help them thrive more. But with proper watering and our maintenance program involved you will achieve that lawn that you so desire.

I work late and I don't always have time to water my new lawn. How often is enough?

Watering is the key element needed to getting your lawn to germinate. With no water, the seeds will struggle and possibly not germinate at all. Look through our picture section and you will notice some lawns doing better in certain areas than others. It’s all due to water. If you can not do the watering that is needed, we can set you up with temporary sprinklers for several weeks or possible a permanent sprinkler that you can enjoy for a lifetime. Please talk to Rick about these options when getting your new lawn installed. Temporary sprinklers can be added to your yard at any time, permanent sprinklers should be installed prior to the hydroseed being applied.

How often should I fertilize my lawn?

Your new Bluegrass lawn was installed with a starter fertilizer. It’s generally good for about 6-8 weeks depending on how much water or rain it received. It gets broken down into the soil with water. After that, your lawn will need another treatment. You can do these follow up fertilizer treatments yourself as needed or Bison Bluegrass can set you up with a program that will provide you a quality looking lawn for years to come and take all that worry away.

My neighbor told me to ask for just Bluegrass seed instead of a mix. Do you offer any choices in your mixes ?

Bison Bluegrass offers a wide variety of seed and seed mixes. Our normal mix has a quality Rye grass seed involved to get a quick start on the growing process to give soil stabilization. The Bluegrass seed takes about 2-3 weeks to germinate. And once it does germinate and become a mature plant it will reproduce giving a thicker lawn as a result.

We also have grass seed mixtures for shady areas and semi shaded areas. Depending on what your new home or business requires, we can mix many different varieties. We also have mixtures for a wet land situation, unique varieties that the government mandates in certain situations. We have mixes for horses, deer and almost anything you can think of.
